Roberta Di Camerino, the Queen of Trompe L'Oeil Couture

Born Giuliana Coen to an Old Jewish Venetian family. She married Guido Camerino with whom she had 2 children. The family fled to switzerland during the war. On her return back to Italy in 1945, Giuliana changed her name to Roberta and established the fashion company Roberta Di Camerino. She choose the name Roberta from the movie "Roberta" starring Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers. Its soundtrack "Smoke gets in your eyes" was the last song she danced to before fleeing to Switzerland.

Roberta Di Camerino's designs are amazing and mysterious. She was adored by Salvatore Dali, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Tailor, to mention but a few. Arguably one of the most copied couturier of her time, Camerino made Woven leather bags before Bottega Veneta copied, She came up with the 'R' trellis pattern on a bag before Gucci followed with the 'G's and Prada later reproduced several of her handbag designs. This upset her so much that Coco Chanel in an effort to reassure her told her "not to cry about being copied, but to cry the day they don't copy you".

Sadly, she died in Venice on 10th of May 2010 at the age of 89.

Roberta di Camerino goods are highly sought after and collectible as a symbol of style and elegance.
